FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD BE DOING TO LEARN ENGLISH (or any language)

There are actually more than five, but if you do these five things every day, your English should improve.

Listen

This is the most important skill for learning English—or any language. Listen to English whenever you get a chance.  Students like to download our courses to practice their listening skills.

Match sounds to words

The regular use of a dictionary, whether online or in the form of an actual book, will help you develop good spelling, pronunciation, and listening skills. Do you own an English dictionary? No? Go get one today!  You can also find on our website  a very large collection of words that you can read and listen to.

Write

You have probably seen the image above on the internet. If you really want to remember what you have learned, you should get in the habit of writing. Writing is especially important when you are working online. Writing is a cognitive skill that requires concentration. Keep a notebook for your lessons and write in it every day. Review your notes regularly. You will notice improvement if you write or practice dictation exercises.

Read

When you are learning a new language, you must read it. Read everything. Read the newspaper. Read stories. Read children's stories. Read poetry. Read novels.  Read your mail. Read your Facebook page. Read the back of the cereal box in the morning. Read English every day.

One last thing. Speak and write

So this list should be called "Six things you should be doing to learn English". But the point here is that you must practice producing your own ideas, whether by talking with another person or writing in a notebook. Some students say speaking is harder than writing; others say writing is harder than speaking. They're both difficult, but you must do them often.  You can also practice writing your ideas in your notebook. Write about your day, or write about your goals. Write a story. Write a letter (on paper!) to your friends, or send email to your classmates.

We hope these suggestions help

You are probably doing these things already, but you might not be. Try to visit our blog often to practice these suggstions.
